President Donald Trump appointed a new US Attorney for the Atlanta area after the previous US attorney, Byung Pak, suddenly resigned on Monday.

It is not certain why Pak resigned so suddenly, or how voluntary his resignation was, although it is not uncommon for US Attorneys to resign in the face of a new broom in the White House.

According to Politico, Trump personally selected US Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia Bobby Christine to fill the role, bypassing normal channels to do so.

Speculation exists as to whether this has anything to do with the still-contested results of the Nov. 3 election, or the pending certification process of said election by Congress which is to be held on Wednesday, in less than 24 hours.

This appointment also comes just before the votes are in on the hotly contested Senate race in Georgia, which will determine the fate of the US Senate.

Presidential or any other kind of official appointments of US Attorneys are not all that common. Back in June, William Barr attempted the same thing in June with the Manhattan District Attorney, but later changed his mind and decided not to pursue the matter any further.
