The White House reported Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris took calls with foreign leaders on behalf of President Joe Biden. It’s unclear why the VP took these high profile calls instead of the President, but it is clear that Kamala Harris will be playing an important role during Biden’s presidency.
The White House released a statement after Monday’s press briefing, indicating that Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with President Emmanuel Macron of France without the presence of Biden.
"Vice President Kamala Harris spoke today with President Emmanuel Macron of France, and expressed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the United States and France," the statement said.
The VP and President of France also discussed strengthening relationships with other countries. "Vice President Harris and President Macron agreed on the need for close bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address COVID-19, climate change, and support democracy at home and around the world. They also discussed numerous regional challenges, including those in the Middle East and Africa, and the need to confront them together," the White House press release stated.
It has also been reported that Vice President Harris held a standalone phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During the 2020 election cycle, many speculated that Harris would play a critical role as Vice President than other Vice Presidents in previous administrations.
Although President Biden has held phone calls with foreign leaders including President Emmanuel Macron of France, Biden has recently come under scrutiny for not yet reaching out to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently dodged questions from reporters when asked if Israel is an important ally to US. The pressure for an answer on why Biden has not yet called the Jewish leader grew so intense that Psaki was forced to address to status of the call as well as Israel's status as an important ally of the US during her Tuesday briefing.
"His first call with a leader in the region will be with Prime Minister Netanyahu," Psaki told White House reporters. "It will be soon. Stay tuned. Israel is an important ally."
