Alberta Premier Jason Kenney made an appearance on Fox News on Saturday to discuss his concerns over the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline by the Biden administration.
"We have the biggest bilateral trade relationship in world history, between Canada and the United States, but the biggest part of that trade is Canadian energy exports largely from our province here of Alberta," Kenney said. "we have the third largest oil reserves in the world, we ship about nearly $100 billion worth of energy to the US every year."
"Keystone XL would have been a safe, modern increase in that shipment. It's very frustrating that one of the first acts of the new President was I think to disrespect America's closest friend and ally Canada and to kill good-paying union jobs on both sides of the border, and ultimately to make the United States more dependent on oil imports from OPEC dictatorships," he continued.
The Biden administration cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline, a campaign promise of his, on his first day in office as part of a series of executive orders signed to combat climate change.
"This is a good day, a good decision for the OPEC producers in reducing Canadian shipments of energy to the world's largest energy consumer," Kenney said after being asked how Saudi Arabia likely felt about this decision. "In particular, Keystone XL, like the current Keystone pipeline, largely ship Alberta heavy crude, and many of the US refineries down on the Gulf coast are keyed up to process-heavy. If they don't get it from Canada, they've got to get it from place, ultimately, like Venezuela."
"I don't see how that's in the interest of the United States," Kenney said.
"My plea to the Biden administration is, please take a half-step back here, get into a conversation with your closest friend and ally Canada, about how we can ensure a future for safe energy exports, continental energy independence and security between Canada and the US, while also taking very seriously climate policy and environmental policy," he continued.
Kenney noted that study by the US State Department under Obama would actually reduce carbon emissions due to pipelines being a more efficient method of transiting oil.
While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed regret over the Biden administration's decision to cancel the pipeline, he has made no indication that the Canadian government will attempt to fight the decision as they did with tariffs against Canada put in place by the previous Trump administration.
