Conservative MP for Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan Garnett Genuis called on the Trudeau Liberals to act concretely on the Uyghur genocide after the House of Commons voted unanimously to condemn the actions ongoing in China's Xinjiang region.

The Liberal cabinet abstained from the vote.

Genuis, who has been a vocal advocate for action against the Chinese government for the atrocities against the Chinese Muslim minority population, said that the Trudeau Liberals should act according to the vote of those elected by Canadians to represent them in government.

"In a responsible government, the cabinet must align their decisions with the perspectives and priorities with the peoples' representatives. If we are going to be serious about promoting human rights abroad, then we must practice democracy at home," said Genuis.

Genuis called for targeted sanctions on those committing the genocide, and says the Conservatives will continue to call for the moving of the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and for meaningful action against products made by Uyghur slave labour.

"The Chinese government has tried to hide these and other egregious crimes against the Uyghurs. However, the recently leaked Karakax list, the operating manual for detention camps exposed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and other leaked secret internal memos have provided an unprecedented inside look at the crackdown on the predominantly Muslim minorities of the Xinjiang region. The evidence is now indisputable," Genuis wrote regarding the genocides on his website.
