A Brampton man is facing a long list of charges after allegedly stealing a luxury vehicle and causing a dangerous police chase through Vaughan and Peel streets.

According to CP24, the incident happened before 4:30 pm on September 16, when York Regional Police responded to the reported theft of a 2019 Mercedes C43 AMG. The car had been stolen from the driveway of a residence near Rutherford Road and Simmons Avenue in Vaughan.

York Regional Police’s Air 2 helicopter was first on scene and located the vehicle in suspect driving on Rutherford Road, say investigators. A police cruiser attempted to stop the vehicle, but it was unsuccessful at doing so.

According to police, the police cruiser stopped pursuing the car, due to concerns for the safety of other motorists. However the suspect continued being tracked by the Air2 helicopter.

The suspect zoomed into Peel regional at high and dangerous speeds, running multiple red lights and stop signs.  He nearly crashed into oncoming traffic and mounted nearby suburbs and sidewalks.

The police helicopter captured video which shows the suspect eventually crashing the stolen vehicle into another car at the intersection of Bovaird Drive West and Great Lakes Drive in Brampton. Police say the driver of that vehicle was sent to hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect then went on to attempt to carjack a number of other automobiles, but failed to successfully do so. He was then found at a local pharmacy and arrested.

Police charged 20-year-old Brampton man Subeethan Uthayakumar with theft over $50,000, robbery, failure to stop at the scene of a collision and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He’s also been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and operation while prohibited.

The charges have yet to be proven in court.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
