White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration would "certainly" support states re-imposing COVID-19 restrictions.
"If the number of cases continues to trend at the border, are there any circumstances under which the White House would re-impose some of those restrictions as cases tick up or would that be up to the states?" a reporter asked Psaki at the White House press briefing Tuesday.
In response to the journalist, Psaki noted that state governments as well as local communities would have to evaluate the situations themselves.
"As you know, there are much higher rates of vaccination in some parts of the country over others. And we certainly support their decisions to implement any measures that they think will help [keep] their communities safe," Psaki replied.
Psaki also on Tuesday stated that the federal government will implement "targeted community by community door-to-door outreach" to vaccinate more Americans.
As of July 5, according to the CDC, 157.3 million Americans have been fully vaccinated. In May, the White House detailed its intentions to have 70 percent of the adult population vaccinated with at least one dose by July 4, promising summer barbecues and family fun to those who got the injections.
The White House pushed, but fell short of the goal. The establishment has worked with both the corporate and public sector to create incentives for Americans to get the vaccine as well as create easier access. Walk-up appointments, free rides, and pop-up and mobile clinics were employed by the administration's toolbox to convince Americans to get the jab, but it wasn't enough to meet the target.
"It's a year of hard-fought … progress. We can't get complacent now. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family and the people you care about the most is get vaccinated," Biden said in remarks at the White House complex on the federal government’s coronavirus response after falling shy of the administration's self-imposed vaccination deadline.
Late last month, Psaki said that we must keep kids masked until they're vaccinated when asked what the Biden administration says to parents who are hearing from the nation's top doctors that children are more vulnerable as the variants are spreading, but at the same time are told many children can't get the vaccine.
"But it's important to continue to abide by the public health guidelines, which means kids wearing masks in certain environments, not others," Psaki said.
