The Benny Johnson Show built a toy store in the poorest place in America and now it's open for the business of holiday cheer. The Christmas Store opened in an abandoned general store in Alamo, Georgia, where a quarter of the entire county lives below the poverty line, the annual income is around $20,000, and there is a large prison, the Wheeler Correctional Facility.
Show host Benny Johnson wanted to help Americans and American families. In a time when so much US focus is on foreign nations, and sending American tax dollars to fund wars and supply aid to foreign nationals, Johnson knew that Americans were being left behind. His team wanted to share the joy with their fellow Americans this Christmas, and that joy is clear on the faces of those who came to do their Christmas shopping at the store, from kids to parents.
"These days there's plenty of attention on other countries around the world," Johnson said, "But we forget that millions of Americans need help too, and some of them live right here in Alamo, Georgia."
"Let's take care of our own country first."
The team brought in Santa Claus to give away more than 500 toys to local children. The way it works, Johnson explains, is that kids get tickets, can exchange them for any toy in the store, and then get to visit with Santa for a classic Christmas photo.
Children and parents lined up down the block. One boy got early access to the store. His father, a police officer, had been killed in the line of duty. The boy was given his own toy police car. A firefighter and his growing family were given free diapers for life from EveryLife, the country's only pro-life diaper company. Other families in need also got early access to the store to pick out their treats.
The children ran in, full of smiles, when the doors opened, choosing toys, getting pictures with Santa, and coming together as a community.
"We'd never been to Alamo, Georgia before," Johnson said. "But they welcomed us like family. By the time we left we were family—or at least neighbors. You're supposed to love your neighbor. The bad forces in America want us to hate each other. They profit off division. Ignore them this Christmas."
"We live in a great country, this place is a gift. And you know the real reason we give presents on Christmas is to remember the gift of Jesus Christ. Kind of amazing what a little gift can do."
The entire project was funded with subscriptions to Johnson on his social media platforms.
