Democrats gloat over use of lawfare to disqualify Trump from Colorado ballot in 2024

"The court’s decision is not only historic and justified."

Democrats were in their glory after the Colorado Supreme Court declared that former President Donald Trump could be removed from the 2024 presidential ballot. While the ruling will definitely be appealed to the Supreme Court, as promised by the Trump campaign, leftists and Democrats who seethe over the idea that Trump could gain a second term in the White House were absolutely thrilled by the verdict.

Noah Bookbinder, president of the not-for-profit Citizens for Responsibility in Ethics in Washington which brought the case in Colorado, took a victory lap after the verdict was announced. Bookbinder was appointed to the Homeland Security Council under Joe Biden by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

"We just won before the Colorado Supreme Court in our challenge to keep Donald Trump off the ballot as disqualified under the 14th amendment for engaging in insurrection," Bookbinder said. "A huge moment for democracy. More to come soon."

"The court’s decision is not only historic and justified, but is necessary to protect the future of democracy in our country. Our Constitution clearly states that those who violate their oath by attacking our democracy are barred from serving in government," Bookbinder said.

President Joe Biden backed the court's claim that Trump was guilty of insurrection, saying "We saw it all, and whether the 14th Amendment applies I’ll let the court make that decision. But he certainly supported an insurrection. There’s no question about it, none, zero. And he seems to be doubling down on about everything."

Mara Gay of The New York Times Editorial Board essentially said that it's racist to believe Trump should stay on the Colorado ballot, because to back his bid to run is to back the slave-holders of the Confederacy. She was asked by Morning Joe hosts what she would say to voters who believed that voters, and not the courts, should determine who they are permitted to vote for in the state of Colorado.

"Why are you standing with Confederates who betrayed this country? And this is what they're standing with, is the spirit of those Confederates rather than the Americans who came together after a long and brutal Civil War that was fought to keep the Union together, and saw, clearly saw a threat in ex-Confederates running for office, so much so, that they amended the Constitution to prevent those traitors from running for office. That should send a message that our election system,  our electoral system, can be used for nefarious purposes against the Democracy itself. It's clear as day."

The never-Trump Lincoln Project's George Conway was glad to tell MSNBC that even the US Supreme Court would not be able to counter the claims by Colorado justices that Trump had engaged in a disqualifying insurrection.

"The judge made extensive findings," Conway said, "a judge that actually ruled for him on a bogus ground, found that he engaged in insurrection, found this by not just a preponderance of the evidence, which is your lower basic civil court standard, but by clear and convincing evidence which means that it's way more than more-likely-than-not, but it's very, very, very strong evidence, and you don't see the dissents' challenging those findings at all."

"And in fact," he went on pontificating, "there's no basis to challenge the findings. When you go to the majority opinion and you read the 30 or 40 pages or I don't know how many there are, on what happened on Janaury 6 and what Donald Trump did before and during January 6, there's no dispute. I mean we saw it on television, we saw, we know what happened, he fomented, he engaged in an insurrection. He wanted this to happen, and not only that, he gave—there's another provision in section 3 of the 14th Amendment that talks about 'giving aid and comfort' to enemies of the Constitution. Well, he did that—he was an enemy of the Constitution. So it's really—if this case, if this decision gets overturned it's not going to be on the basis  of factual findings."

Keith Olbermann loved it, saying that the Colorado Supreme Court "defended the Constitution" in removing Biden's top political opponent from the ballot. He claimed that if the Supreme Court overrules the lower court decision that will be "the end of its role in America."

Donald Trump has neither been charged with nor convicted of the crime of insurrection.
