A new poll conducted by CNN and SSRS just days before Ron DeSantis revealed that he would be formally announcing his candidacy for president of the United States has revealed that the Florida governor is half as popular as former president Donald Trump among Republican voters.
While Trump may have a commanding lead over his next closest rival, many of the GOP faithful indicated that they would be open to supporting other candidates down the road.
According to the poll, which was conducted between May 17-20, 53 percent of Republican voters said they would consider themselves as "currently supporting" Trump, while DeSantis garnered only 26 percent in that category.
Compared to the previous data set, collected between March 8-12, DeSantis lost 10 points, while Trump gained 13.
When it came to whether voters "would consider supporting" Trump or DeSantis, the numbers were reversed. Nearly 60 percent said they could see themselves voting for DeSantis, while only 31 percent said the same for Trump.
Roughly 15 percent of respondents said they "would not support" Trump or DeSantis "under any circumstances."
The two frontrunners are well ahead of their next closest rivals, with Mike Pence and Nikki Haley tied for third place with 6 percent of the vote. The poll showed that 73 percent of Republican voters were "satisfied" with the field of GOP candidates running for president.
On Tuesday, DeSantis revealed that he was officially running for president, informing voters that his announcement would be made Wednesday via a Twitter Spaces event with Elon Musk.
Whether making his candidacy official will have an impact on DeSantis' poll numbers remains to be seen, but many within the governor's team have suggested that some Trump voters will shift their support to his campaign.
