Update: In a statement to the New York Post following the press conference, Karine Jean-Pierre said she didn’t mean to use the term "deepfakes," adding "They are fakes – cheap fakes."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday blamed "deepfakes" for the videos of President Joe Biden looking confused at different events recently.

"We're seeing these deepfakes, these manipulated videos, and it is again, done in bad faith," Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House. During the response to the question from reporters, she also referred to the videos as "cheapfakes."

The press secretary referred to the videos where Biden was seen crouching prior to everyone else on stage before he sat down with Jill Biden as well as French President Emmanual Macron. Another video she said was a "deepfake" was the video of Biden appearing to wander off when he was in Italy. The President was standing with a group of world leaders at the G7 summit and when he walked in a different direction, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni guided him back to the G7 leaders.

The comments came in response to reporters in the room asking about Biden’s older age seemingly getting to him in recent weeks during public appearances. During a fundraiser on Saturday night as well as at a Juneteenth event at the White House, Biden appeared to freeze up in both instances.

Former President Barak Obama led him by his hand on Saturday evening when the event came to a close. During the Juneteenth music performance while people were dancing around him at the White House, George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd appeared to rouse Biden when he appeared to freeze up.

Jean-Pierre also doubled-down on the claim that the videos were “cheapfakes” when she was asked about Obama appearing to lead Biden off the stage at the fundraiser. When pressed by reporters on Biden appearing to freeze up at the White House as well as at the G7 she was adamant that the videos “are false” and are “purposefully being altered.”

She said to focus on what Biden has done with policy during his tenure instead of the videos.
