May was subsequently arrested and hit with a slew of charges related to the incident, which police said was the end result of a verbal argument between the pair that turned violent.
According to WAVE3, officers were called to a home in the 1700 block of Bolling Avenue in southwest Louisville around 7 p.m. on August 16. When they arrived, they heard the woman screaming for help from a bedroom on the second floor.
Officers attempted to enter the home via the front door, but soon realized it had been barricaded from within. Using a ladder, they managed to access a window on the second floor and climb inside.
The woman was found chained to the floor, the links around her neck fastened with a MasterLock. Officers used a hatchet and bolt cutters to disconnect the chain from the ground and her neck, respectively. She was quickly treated by emergency medical personnel.
Dramatic bodycam footage of the rescue shows the woman in tears, thanking officers for saving her.
Two days later, May was apprehended and arrested. He has since been charged with kidnapping, intimidating a participant in the legal process, wanton endangerment, assault, terroristic threatening, and harassment.
According to the arrest report, a verbal argument between May and the woman on August 14 turned violent. May allegedly grabbed her and held her down on the bathroom floor while using a machete to cut off most of her hair. He also hit her as she fled the home.
The woman returned on Wednesday to pick up her belongings, and it was then that May allegedly told her "You're gonna get it tonight. I told you the next time you leave and don't come home, I'd kill you." He then chained her to the floor and locked the doors.
May pleaded not guilty and is being held on $100,000 bond ahead of his next court appearance, which is scheduled for August 28.
