A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll has revealed that independent voters believe a second term of Joe Biden would be a greater threat to democracy than a second term of Donald Trump in the White House.

Overall, 47 percent of registered voters said Biden would "weaken our democracy" while 48 percent said that Trump would weaken it. Despite more people saying Trump would weaken democracy, more people said he would strengthen it, with 38 percent responding as such for Trump compared to Biden’s 32 percent.

Among independent voters, just 24 percent said that Biden would strengthen the country's democracy, while 53 percent said he would weaken it. For Trump, 40 percent said he would strengthen it, while 42 percent said he would weaken it.

Some MSNBC panelists were shocked by the number of independents who said Biden would weaken democracy in the poll, with one saying, "I find it shocking, honestly, I can’t make sense of that number. I wish I could. I wish I had some really great insight to it, but I don’t know if it’s an outlier or not, because the other numbers with independents and Biden are going in the right direction."

The poll was conducted between April 22 and 24 of 1,109 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3.7 percent.

The poll also found that Biden had a 42 percent approval rating among voters, and that 42 percent of voters had a favorable impression of him.

Biden led by two points over Trump in a head-to-head rematch, 50 to 48 percent, with the lead dropping to a 42-42 tie between the two candidates with third-party candidates added into the mix.

Trump also had more people voting for him because they supported him and not because they were against the other candidate. 61 percent of people who said they would vote for Trump said they were doing it because they support him, while 37 percent said they were voting for Trump because they were opposed to Biden.

Among Biden supporters, 57 percent said they would vote for Biden because they like him, and 41 percent said they would vote for him because they are against Trump.
