New footage has emerged depicting the moments before a mob of teenagers violently beat up three United States Marines on a California beach over Memorial Day weekend. Prior to the incident, which took place Friday evening near the Pier Bowl in San Clemente, the Marines were caught on camera wrestling shirtless, and even appeared to be playing cards with the teens while drinking alcohol.
One of the Marines, Hunter Antonino, claimed that after confronting the group for acting aggressively and lighting firecrackers at the beach, he was hit in the head with debris, and a fight ensued.
In footage obtained by the Daily Mail on Wednesday, a cowboy hat and flannel-clad Antonino can be seen sitting at a table playing cards and talking with a group of teens while clutching a bottle of whiskey.
Later on in the evening, two of the Marines were caught on camera pushing each other around shirtless, almost wrestling after one of them dropped his beer. As the aggression intensified, a crowd of teens that had formed on the periphery began pushing them.
Two of the Marines ended up on the ground in the fetal position while the teens punched and kicked them. Adults were eventually able to step in and break up the fight.
On Wednesday, San Clemente Mayor Chris Duncan announced that nine teens had been arrested in connection with the attack.
Five of them, four males and one female, were charged with assault with a deadly weapon and taken to the Orange County Juvenile Hall. Another four were charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, and will have their fate decided out of custody.
"In today's age, you’re going to get caught," Duncan warned. "People are going to record it. I hope this serves as a learning lesson for young folks in the community not to let themselves get out of control when something like this happens."
Following the incident, Duncan lamented the fact that the victims were members of the Armed Services, calling the situation "particularly tragic."
