A recent election survey released by AARP Pennsylvania sheds light on how voters aged 50 and older perceive the presidential candidates, claiming this voter demographic will be the “key in determining who wins in November.”

According to AARP, older Pennsylvanians will play a pivotal role in determining the election's outcome, as they constitute a significant portion of the electorate. In the 2020 elections, voters aged 50 and older accounted for 55 percent of all Pennsylvania voters, rising to 62 percent in the 2022 midterms.

The survey also found high levels of motivation among this demographic, with 85 percent of these voters saying they are “extremely motivated” to vote in this election.

Former President Donald Trump holds a four-point lead over President Joe Biden in the survey, with 49 over of respondents in the state overall supporting Trump compared to 45 percent for Biden. Among voters aged 50 and older, Trump's lead widens to a commanding 52 percent compared to Biden's 42 percent.

Bill Johnston Walsh, State Director of AARP Pennsylvania, emphasized the importance of the presidential candidates addressing issues that resonate with older voters, such as protecting Social Security and supporting family caregivers.

“Pennsylvania voters over age 50 are a critical voting bloc that all candidates are competing for in this election,” said Walsh. “Pennsylvanians of all political stripes want leaders to protect Social Security and provide support for family caregivers. If candidates want to win, they should pay attention to the issues that matter to Pennsylvanians ages 50-plus.”

The survey also revealed that a significant majority of older Pennsylvanians, 68%, believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction. Additionally, 63 percent expressed concerns about their personal financial situation, with the rising cost of food and utilities identified as the primary sources of financial stress.
