Authorities are investigating after a package detonated at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts Tuesday evening, which left at least one person injured on the first day of classes on campus. According to CNN, the package contained a manifesto against Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Law enforcement insiders said that the package contained a note attacking Zuckerberg as well as virtual reality.

According to Boston Police, officers responded to Holmes Hall at 39 Leon St. at approximately 7:16 pm for a report of a "potential package that had detonated." A 45-year-old male staff member was injured in the explosion. The victim was taken to a local hospital via ambulance with minor hand injuries.

Boston EMS and Boston fire also responded to the scene.

Boston Police Superintendent Felipe Colon said at a Tuesday night press conference that a second similar package was found and "rendered safe" by the bomb squad. No potential motive was given.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities could not definitively state how the package came to be on campus. According to the university, the campus will be open for classes on Wednesday.

The university said in a statement, "The building has been evacuated and a notification was sent to the Boston campus at 7:55 pm urging people to avoid the area. We will update members of the Northeastern community when more information is available."

Susanna Maize a student at the school told a local Fox affiliate, “All of a sudden, the fire alarms went off. We didn’t think much of it. We thought it could be a routine fire alarm. All of a sudden the police started pushing us back setting up tape.”

Ryan Dicorpo told the outlet, “When we came out we saw multiple fire trucks. At least four or five. One of the ladders was raised to the roof... one of the firefighters went up with what I believe was an ax and went onto the roof.”

The FBI told Fox News that its Boston field office "is aware of the incident and coordinating with our law enforcement partners as expected."

Police at nearby Tufts University and Harvard urged residents to avoid the area as did police at MIT who asked the community to report "suspicious packages."

Mayor Michelle Wu praised police for their actions, saying: "We want to make sure to emphasize that this is of the utmost priority, the safety and well-being of all our young people here."
