Among independents, Trump still held more support than Musk, with 18 percent backing Trump and 8 percent backing Musk. However, the majority (59 percent) said they supported neither of the two.
The clash between the two influential figures became public after Musk distanced himself from the Trump administration and voiced strong opposition to the “Big, Beautiful Bill” that has passed the House but has not gone to a vote in the Senate yet. Musk took issue with the amount of spending in the bill, and said during the back-and-forth between the two figures, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
He also accused the federal government of withholding Jeffrey Epstein-related documents due to Trump's alleged involvement, however, Musk later deleted the post.
"Time to drop the really big bomb: Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk posted earlier this week before taking it down.
Trump responded to Musk on Truth Social, suggesting the possibility of ending federal contracts with Musk’s companies. He also accused Musk of acting erratically after electric vehicle mandates were left out of the budget bill.
“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday.
As of Saturday morning, Musk appeared to have deleted the Epstein accusation as well as other posts, including one in which he supported calls for Trump to be impeached and replaced with Vice President JD Vance.
