El-Sayed said he wanted to reach the influencer’s large online audience.
During an interview, El-Sayed was asked about criticism surrounding his appearances with Piker, who has drawn controversy for his political commentary and views. El-Sayed said partnering with Piker allowed him to connect with his audience of millions.
“Look, I want to reach out to his viewers. He has a 3-million-person platform and there are things that Hasan and I disagree with if you watched any of our content together,” El-Sayed said. “And there are things that he and I agree with on the question of whether or not we should be guaranteeing people health care or sending our money abroad to drop bombs on other people,” he said. “We agree. I think we should be providing health care here.”
El-Sayed also said the pair agreed on opposing what he described as the “fascism of the Trump administration.”
El-Sayed has also voiced that he wants driver's licenses for illegal immigrants in an unearthed clip that made the rounds online this week. In an interview with PBS, he said he wanted to “push forward legislation that would preempt localities from participating with ICE and using their local resources to do the same.”
He also criticized restrictions placed on undocumented immigrants, arguing that they face unnecessary barriers to accessing state services. “Right now, if you're undocumented, you don't get access to a driver's license, so you're stuck,” El-Sayed said. “You don't get access to a lot of the basic things the state offers everybody else, and I think that's ridiculous. And so we've got to stop discriminating that way.”
