The actress joined nearly 45,000 petitioners calling for New York City's mayor to be excluded from the 25th anniversary ceremony honoring victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The “Everybody Loves Raymond” star shared the petition organized by families of 9/11 victims with her more than 500,000 followers on X, urging supporters: "Keep it going New Yorkers." The petition has attracted nearly 45,000 signatures and argues that Mamdani should not attend the solemn anniversary because of his positions on issues related to Israel and terrorism.
It also criticizes his reluctance to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada" and cites his association with chief counsel Ramzi Kassem, who previously represented convicted al-Qaeda operative Ahmed al-Darbi.
One of the petitioners wrote: "I am incensed that a terrorist excuser is now Mayor, and outspoken sympathizer for terrorist perpetrators. He is disqualified from attending the 9/11 remembrance ceremony and ought to be barred."
Heaton spoke about her own experience of September 11, having been in New York City with the cast of “Everybody Loves Raymond” when terrorists hijacked four airliners and murdered nearly 3,000 people. "I happened to be in New York City on September 11, 2001 with the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond. It was a terrifying experience," Heaton wrote on the anniversary in 2024.
The petition was launched by Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace was killed in the September 11 attacks. It argues that the anniversary should remain "grounded in shared American values: respect for the victims, recognition of the gravity of the attacks, and a clear rejection of the ideologies that contributed to such violence." Mamdani has rejected calls to stay away. Asked whether he would attend the ceremony, the mayor said he plans to "proudly honor" the victims and their families by "standing alongside them" during the 25th anniversary commemorations in September.
