As homeless encampments are set up in the middle of Edmonton's historic Old Strathcona area, the provincial NDP opposition is proposing legalizing California-style tent cities.

"We're not making any demands or anything. We just want to draw attention to the issue of youth homelessness before winter hits. We need to get rooms for these guys," said Cameron Noyes, an activist working with the city's homeless population, according to an article by CTV News Edmonton.

"We are getting a lot of people up on Whyte Avenue from the tent city down there," Noyes said.

The provincial NDP opposition is examining possible solutions, which one of the options being analyzed is to legalize the homeless encampments by "establishing safe, legal campsites on public lands."

As of September 2020, almost 2,000 people in the Edmonton area are homeless and almost 30 percent of these, for various reasons, wind up camping instead of staying at shelters.

The problem of tent cities in the Edmonton area has been a growing concern for the city's residents.
