Biden admin announces plan to develop offshore wind farms along coastline

The farms will help achieve the administration's goal to produce 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030, which would generate enough electricity to power over 10 million homes.

The Biden administration announced Wednesday their plan to develop offshore wind farms in hopes of transforming America's energy production for a greener future.

Over the past few years, more and more nations have begun moving away from fossil fuels towards greener alternatives. A plan announced by the Biden administration this week signals the US heading in that direction as well.

According to the Associated Press, the plan includes offshore wind farms across the eastern seaboard from Maine to the Carolinas and throughout the coastline of Oregon, California, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The farms will help achieve the administration's goal to produce 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030, which would generate enough electricity to power over 10 million homes.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said her department "is laying out an ambitious road map as [they] advance the Biden administration's plans to confront climate change, create good-paying jobs and accelerate the nation's transition to a cleaner energy future."

The administration claims that meeting the aforementioned clean energy goals will foster over 44,000 jobs directly and another 33,000 in related fields.

While many have applauded President Biden's commitment to a greener future, some have expressed concerns regarding the proposed wind farms' impact on the surrounding environment, namely threats they pose to birds and aquatic ecosystems.
