US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy says parenting is bad for your mental health due to high levels of stress involved in raising children.

Murthy said in an advisory issued Wednesday form the Biden-Harris Department of Health and Human Services, that he can say from the experience of being a father of two that being a parent is both the "toughest and most rewarding” job he’s had in his life.

“The stresses parents and caregivers have today are being passed to children in direct and indirect ways, impacting families and communities across America,” he said.

In the advisory, it stated, “When stress is severe or prolonged, it can have a deleterious effect; 41% of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function and 48% say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming compared to other adults (20% and 26%, respectively).”

Murthy cited social media, a youth mental health crisis and the “epidemic of loneliness” affecting young people and their parents as the singular challenges of the current generation. This is despite other generations facing harsher financial situations as well as other struggles.

“Struggles like how to manage the harms of social media, how to deal with gun violence in communities and the youth mental-health crisis are newer issues that the current generation of parents are dealing with and they need to be a priority,” Murthy said in the advisory.

“In my conversations with parents and caregivers across America, I have found guilt and shame have become pervasive, often leading them to hide their struggles, which perpetuates a vicious cycle where stress leads to guilt which leads to more stress,” he said.

Murthy believes there should be more government programs for parents coping with parenting including mandatory time off work to tend to sickness in the family, more affordable daycare, and increased availability of mental health services.

“Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us,” Murthy said. “And the health and well-being of those who are caring for our children should matter to us as well.”

Murthy, who was appointed to his job by President Joe Biden, opposed Florida's Parental Rights in Education law. He has also demanded that Joe Rogan be censored because guests on his show were disputing the “science” behind Biden’s Covid mandates.

"Florida's recent law restricting discussion about gender identity in school has understandably raised serious concerns. The law concerns me too," Murthy said of the law in 2022.
