On Thursday, the man suspected of brutally murdering 32-year-old Brooklyn activist Ryan Carson was apprehended by police and taken into custody.
Brian Dowling, 18, allegedly stabbed Carson to death while he and his girlfriend were waiting for the bus.
According to the New York Post, after Dowling was named as a suspect, police executed a search warrant at a home on Lafayette Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard, near where the beloved activist was killed.
When authorities arrived, they discovered Dowling in the home wearing the same clothing as the man in footage of the incident. They also recovered a knife, though it has not been determined whether it was the murder weapon.
Dowling has a history of violence, including one instance where his own aunt called 911 on him after he went on a rampage and smashed up the belongings in his girlfriend's apartment in July. While he was ultimately not arrested, an incident report was filed.
Carson was a passionate defender of his values and worked tirelessly to advocate for a number of causes, including safe injection sites. To make his point, he once walked from New York City to Buffalo, stopping in Albany to scold the governor to failing to live up to his promises.
In an interview with the Post, Carson's roommate Tom Krantz described him as "someone who worked piously to help make this city a better place," pointing out that he was "the epicenter of an entire community that he created."
Carson was originally from Massachusetts, but came to New York in 2010 and made a home for himself in Bed-Stuy. He quickly made a name for himself in activist circles.
In addition to being an activist, Carson was a published poet. One of his more well-known pieces focused on death, but rather than lamenting the impact it would have on him, he expressed concern that those he loved would be hurt most.
A GoFundMe launched shortly after his death has since raised over $65,000.
