"Our intent was to host a debate coming out of the Iowa caucuses, but we always knew that would be contingent on the candidates and the outcome of the race."

A debate held by ABC News and WMUR which was set to take place on Thursday in New Hampshire ahead of the state’s primary election has been cancelled.

An ABC News spokesperson said in a statement, "Our intent was to host a debate coming out of the Iowa caucuses, but we always knew that would be contingent on the candidates and the outcome of the race. As a result, while our robust election coverage will continue, ABC News and WMUR-TV will not be moving forward with Thursday’s Republican presidential primary debate in New Hampshire."

ABC News and the New Hampshire TV station WMUR set a deadline to respond to invitations for the three remaining candidates who qualified for Tuesday afternoon. The Nikki Haley and Donald Trump campaigns did not confirm their attendance.

The cancelation comes as Haley wrote on X Tuesday morning that she would only debate Trump for Joe Biden for her next debate, saying that Trump has "ducked" all five debates that have taken place during primary campaigning.

In another post, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that Haley was "afraid to debate because she doesn’t want to answer the tough questions," adding that he would appear in New Hampshire and "look forward to debating two empty podiums in the Granite State this week."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
