Bryan Kohberger has been granted a new hearing date as he seeks to withdraw his guilty plea in the murders of four University of Idaho students.
Kohberger was granted a new hearing scheduled for June 2027 after filing a petition for post-conviction relief last month. He has also been appointed a new defense attorney to represent him.
The development comes after Kohberger accepted a plea deal last July in connection with the 2022 murders of four students. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
As part of his plea deal, Kohberger waived his right to appeal. However, he was still able to file a separate petition for post-conviction relief under Idaho law.
A handwritten petition written by Kohberger last month claimed that he was "convicted to falsely confess" by his defense team. In a statement to The New York Times, Kohberger attested that he is innocent, despite explicitly admitting guilt in court.
"My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn," he said.
Judge Steven Hippler, the same judge who accepted Kohberger's guilty pleas last year, set a status conference for June 3, 2027, and an evidentiary hearing for June 17.
In a statement to Fox News after Kohberger's petition was filed, Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador said his office is "ready to do whatever is necessary to ensure justice is fully carried out."
