James’s office was served with subpoenas this week demanding documents, including records tied to her civil fraud lawsuit against Trump.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York is leading the probe, two of the sources told NBC News. Investigators are looking into whether James’ office violated legal rights “under the color of law” in pursuing its civil litigation.
James previously won a civil fraud judgment against Trump and his company after alleging he inflated his net worth and financial statements. The court ordered Trump and his organization to pay more than $300 million in disgorgement. The case is under appeal.
Her office also took the NRA to court, targeting the group and its leaders over alleged financial misconduct. While she sought to dissolve the NRA entirely — a move described as the corporate “death penalty” — a judge dismissed that request, though other claims in the case remain active.
