Former longtime aide to Dr. Anthony Fauci, David Morens, has pleaded guilty in a conspiracy to evade public records requests surrounding communications and research regarding Covid-19.

Morens, 78, of Maryland, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States. He also served as a senior advisor in NIAID’s Office of the Director from 2006 through 2022 under Fauci, per the Department of Justice.

The plea from Morens comes weeks after Fauci was grilled on his relationship with the former aide during a contentious Senate hearing where Fauci pleaded the Fifth 111 times.

Fauci said that Morens’ actions were “wrong” when he spoke to a House Committee two years ago about investigating the country’s response to Covid-19. He claimed at the time that he did not participate in them.

In an email from 2021 that was released by the House panel, Morens had boasted about how to “make emails disappear after I am FOIA’d" in order to avert federal open records request, which is a violation of law.

Morens' sentencing has been set for November 12 by US District Judge Paula Xinis. Morens faces up to five years in prison on the felony conspiracy charge and a fine of up to $250,000.

The plea comes as Fauci has been under heavy scrutiny as of late as Republican lawmakers have been looking for answers about what happened during the country's response to Covid-19. Records from Fauci's diary and his phone that he kept during his time as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has also been released, revealing that his personal thoughts on the pandemic response were at times at odds with what he said in public.
