The spin-off dubbed the "gayest Star Wars ever" will not be returning for season 2. The Acolyte, from showrunner Leslye Headland, has been canceled.

"The Acolyte” will not return for Season 2," Variety reports. "Lucasfilm has elected not to continue with the 'Star Wars' series following its first season, which depicted the rise of the Sith roughly 100 years before the events of 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.'"

The show featured the first instance of trans pronouns in the Star Wars universe and while it had an 83 percent average among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers only have it a 14 percent.

Despite that, the cancellation was a surprise as season 1 ended on a cliffhanger. But fan response was pretty lackluster and the viewership dropped substantially after the series premiere. Headland's Acolyte was the first in the Star Wars universe to be set outside of the core storyline.

In an interview about the series, headland and series star Amandla Stenberg, was asked about the rumor that The Acolyte was the "gayest Star Wars ever." The two were super into it.

"I wanna ask you about this," The Wrap's Drew Taylor began, "because this is arguably the gayest Star Wars yet by a considerable margin."

"Are you exciting about that? Are you bracing yourselves?" Taylor continued.

"Not the gayest Star Wars!" Headland joked.

"It's pretty gay, let's be honest," Taylor said. "Leslye, how do you feel?"

"Am I gay?" She countered. "Yes." Taylor joked that he knew that she was gay, and pressed about how that gayness impacted The Acolyte.

"I know you're gay, but are you excited about—this is going to be a talking point," he said.

"Is it gonna be a talking point?" Headland said with surprise.

"Because nerds are gay," Stenberg said. The three went back and forth on if nerds are really gay or if only some nerds are gay and others are turned off by things that are very explicitly gay.

Taylor expressed that "some nerds are very not gay and are threatened by gay stuff."

"In my world," Stenberg said, "nerds are gay." They all laughed.

"Is this a fun element of—" Taylor said.

"No," Headland said, "but people have told me that it's the gayest Star Wars and frankly I am—"

"Are you offended?" Stenberg laughed.

"—into it," Headland is.

Stenberg released a music video complaining about the conservative co-option of the term "woke" and was a supporter of the Gaza camps on college campuses.
