Bernard "Bernie" Marcus, the cofounder of Home Depot as well as a major donor to Republicans, has died at the age of 95. The billionaire has been an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump in recent years.

According to CNN, Marcus has a net worth of around $7.4 billion and gained his wealth through his founding of Home Depot in partnership with Arthur Blank in 1978. He was born in Newark, New Jersey to Russian Jewish immigrants and was the youngest of four siblings. He passed away in Boca Raton.

Marucs and Blank met in California where they were both fired from the management of a home improvement company. In response, the duo launched the Home Depot, which was meant to be a large-scale home improvement chain in contrast to smaller companies. With that vision, the Home Depot was started. Marcus was the CEO of Home Depot until around 1997 and then served as the chairman of the corporation until he retired in 2002.

The billionaire has donated millions to Republicans over the years, including to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. He has also supported many charities as well as Jewish medical organizations. During later years in his life he would frequently appear on news shows to tout his support for Trump as well as conservative policy.

In an interview from 2022 with the Financial Times, Marcus warned about the spread of “socialism” in America and added, “Nobody works. Nobody gives a d*mn. ‘Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work — I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid.’”

“We used to have free speech here. We don’t have it,” Marcus told the outlet at the time. “The woke people have taken over the world. You know, I imagine today they can’t attack me. I’m 93. Who gives a crap about Bernie Marcus?”
