BREAKING: House impeaches Biden's DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

The vote was 214 in favor to 213 against.

The House gathered on Tuesday night to reconsider last week's failed motion to impeach Biden's DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and they did so, with a vote of 214 in favor to 213 against. Rep. Steve Scalise was in the House this week and was able to cast his vote in favor of impeachment.

It is unlikely that the Democrat controlled Senate will take up the vote.

This week's vote comes after a vote failed to pass the House last week, but the GOP were able to leave it open for a motion to reconsider, which was held on Tuesday right before the vote to impeach. Mayorkas' impeachment marks the first time a cabinet member has been impeached in 150 years.

House Republicans have been attempting to impeach Mayorkas for months, with Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene leading the charge to get him out for "high crimes and misdemeanors."

The impeachment articles accuse Mayorkas of having "repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security" and of having "made false statements to Congress" that the border is secure and closed and that DHS is in operational control of the border.

Last week in his own defense, Mayorkas released a letter defending his record and belittling the proceedings. He wrote, "I assure you that your false accusations do not rattle me and do not divert me from the law enforcement and broader public service mission to which I have devoted most of my career and to which I remain devoted.”

He claimed that record-breaking border crossings were due to "…problems with our broken and outdated immigration system are not new," calling the allegations against him “…baseless and inaccurate."

In March 2021, he told would-be illegal immigrants "We are not saying don't come, we are saying don't come now, because we will be able to deliver safe and orderly process to them as quickly as possible." Mayorkas said that would-be immigrations should wait "with a goal in mind."

President Joe Biden issued a statement on the matter.
