"ICE is doing their job," said Tom Homan.
New border czar for the Trump administration Tom Homan said that ICE had arrested 308 illegal immigrants, or the new term "illegal aliens," on Tuesday. President Donald Trump was sworn in on Monday. Homan said on Tuesday operations have already begun.
"ICE is doing their job," said Homan, per the New York Post. He said that the first people who were rounded up were those who pose threats to "public safety," and that there are some 700,000 of individuals of that nature in the US currently.
Homan vowed to hit the ground running after he was appointed to the post shortly after Trump won the White House back in November. Since then, he's been revealing how the mass deportation operations promised on Trump's campaign trail would work.
The first step, he said, is to deport those who have committed criminal acts in addition to crossing the border illegally, such as those who are in jail facing charges or have detainers our for their arrest already.
Just one week prior to Trump's taking office, the first plans of ICE were leaked to the press, which reported that deportations would begin in Chicago. Homan revamped the plans to account for security concerns, and then jumped ahead anyway.
In the brief hours since Trump took office, the border crossing at El Paso has bene shut down, flights for refugees seeking entry into the US have been canceled, and the CBP 1 app, which allowed those intending to entry the country access to scheduled surrender times at ports of entry, has been shut down.
