BREAKING: Judge strikes down motion requesting Lindsay Clancy be found not guilty of murdering her children

“The Court finds that the evidence ... was sufficient to have satisfied any rational trier of fact beyond a reasonable doubt as to the essential element of the defendant’s criminal responsibility.”

Judge William Sullivan of the Massachusetts Superior Court issued a ruling on Thursday declining to issue a not guilty verdict in the Lindsay Clancy case. This comes after Clancy’s attorney argued on Tuesday that she should be found not guilty under Rule 25 of the state’s Rules of Criminal Procedure due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

In a court hearing on Tuesday, Reddington attempted to argue that evidence was insufficient to prove that Clancy had been the one to kill her kids, and that she was criminally responsible for the actions. Both arguments were rejected by Sullivan.

Sullivan ruled, “The Court finds that the evidence, when viewed in the light most favorable to the Commonwealth and with the reasonable inferences permitted to be drawn, was sufficient to have satisfied any rational trier of fact beyond a reasonable doubt as to the essential element of the defendant’s criminal responsibility.”

Sullivan wrote regarding the identity argument, “With respect to the elements of murder and the identity of who committed the alleged crimes, the evidence presented by the Commonwealth in its case in chief, when viewed in the light most favorable to the Commonwealth, was sufficient to satisfy any rational trier of fact beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The defense was attempting to argue during the trial that Clancy was not criminally responsible for the killings of her three young children because of postpartum psychosis. Her weeks-long trial ended in a hung jury at the beginning of September after a lone juror held out against 11 others who wanted to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. The lone juror wanted to find her guilty.
