Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has chosen to mark International Women’s Day by issuing a statement declaring that “trans women are women” and that the Government of Canada “will always stand up to hate whenever and wherever it occurs.”
Trudeau began by saying that International Women’s Day celebrates and recognises the achievements of women and girls in Canada and stated that this year’s theme, Every Woman Counts, is a “reminder that all women, from all ages and walks of life, have a place in every aspect of Canadian society.
“With a disturbing recent rise in anti-transgender hate here in Canada, we reiterate today that trans women are women and we will always stand up to hate whenever and wherever it occurs,” said the prime minister.
This statement comes just days after Hershey Canada revealed they had chosen to feature a trans-identified male as one of the faces of its Her for She campaign in honour of International Women’s Day.
Fae Johnstone, a biological male who calls for women with different political opinions to be “so vilified they don’t dare speak,” announced being selected by Hershey last week, and within hours the hashtag #BoycottHersheys was trending as women all over the world voiced their outrage at such a male being chosen to represent women.
Johnstone also advocates for male rapists to be housed in women’s prisons and believes the Canadian government should “unequivocally affirm trans women are women” and that “ideologies saying otherwise are based in transphobia.”
Women were quick to respond angrily to the prime minister choosing International Women’s Day as the day to proclaim his support of males such as Johnstone.
“You hateful, disgraceful waste of space! How dare you collude with TRAs to shoehorn themselves into #InternationalWomenDay2023?? How dare you? We don’t give a damn for your pronouncements and you don’t speak for us!,” tweeted one Canadian woman.
It’s not hate @JustinTrudeau. It’s fundamental disagreement. If you don’t acknowledge that binary sex exists then your government is bound to enact laws and policies that are terrible for women - *which has happened!* It’s your ‘rising hate against female persons’,” tweeted female sports advocate Linda Blade.
“Advocating for sex-based rights isn’t ‘hate.’ We just don’t think a biological male trans baby rapist should be sentenced to a women’s prison with a maternity unit like your government does,” tweeted Drea Humphrey of Rebel News.
