Police believe that the five people who were struck by a vehicle were intentionally targeted due to their Islamic faith, reports CTV.

Police say that 20 year-old Nathaniel Veltman has been arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder, and one count of attempted murder.

One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman, one man, and a teenager all passed away in hospital. One child is also in hospital receiving care.

The man operating the vehicle was apprehended by police six kilometres away from the scene of the crash.

"There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act and that the family was targeted because of their Muslim faith," Det.-Insp. Paul Waight said on Monday.

"This is a devastating loss of four members of our community,"

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent in online anonymously to London Elgin Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
