This comes less than a month before his state case on the same shooting is set to begin.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed the move to the New York Post on Thursday, the same day it was revealed that a surprise hearing was going to be held on Friday. In the federal case, Mangione is charged with two counts of stalking resulting in death.
Pleading guilty in the federal case would like result in Mangione still facing the possibility of a life sentence, however, the plea could interfere with his state trial due to New York’s rules against double jeopardy.
Reports surfaced on Thursday that Mangione's team and federal prosecutors had been discussing a potential plea deal. A last-minute hearing was scheduled for Friday morning at the request of both the defense and prosecution.
Mangione's New York state case is currently set to begin with jury selection on September 8. At a Tuesday hearing in that case, the judge ruled that the jury for the trial will be anonymous and allowed the use of an overflow room for media and spectators. Concerns were raised about intimidation and harassment against witnesses and jurors in the case. Both audio and video was approved for the overflow room, and over 80 news organizations are expected to attend if the case moves forward as currently scheduled.
Mangione is charged with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson had been fatally shot in the back outside of a Midtown Manhattan hotel. A days-long pursuit of the suspect followed, with Mangione being arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. Mangione has been charged at the federal level, as well as in both New York and Pennsylvania.
