After three rounds of voting on Tuesday, a House Speaker has still not been elected, though Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California has the backing of most of the GOP majority in that body, as well as the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
Democratic Whip-elect Katherine Clark sent a notice to members of the House to vote against a GOP motion to adjourn for the day, if offered, according to Senior Congressional Correspondent for Fox News Chad Pergram.
There are 20 hold-outs in the Freedom Caucus who have declined to vote for McCarthy, instead throwing their support behind Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, who in turn both backed and nominated McCarthy for the post.
It has now been reported by The Hill that McCarthy would like to see the House adjourn until Thursday, though a fourth vote for House Speaker is set to take place on Wednesday at 12 pm.
McCarthy and his allies have been working behind the scenes to secure a deal within the House GOP to gain the 218 votes he needs to take the speakership.
Jake Sherman of NBC reports that according to "several sources," "House Republicans will try to adjourn until TOMORROW, forgoing speaker votes today House Democrats will whip AGAINST this. republicans will have to carry this adjournment vote on their own."
Democrats have no need for an adjournment, as all members cast their votes for New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
The vote to adjourn would require "a simple majority."
McCarthy has the endorsement of the sole announced Republican presidential candidate and former president Donald Trump, who said after the three failed votes on Tuesday, "some really good conversations took place," and that now is the "time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY..."
