Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Waterford Township) declared victory to her supporters Tuesday night in her Democratic congressional primary matchup with Rep. Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township). The winner of the primary will face off against the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election.
According to the Oakland Press, Stevens received 57 percent of the vote with 36,564 total votes while Levin had received 42 percent of the vote with 27,096 total votes with 81 of 299 precincts reporting in the incumbent-vs.-incumbent primary.
The state’s congressional districts were redrawn last year. Stevens and Levin both chose to run in the new 11th district which Stevens currently represents, while Levin represents the 9th district.
A recent poll showed Rep. Haley Stevens, with a 27-point lead over Levin. Levin turned to the far-left progressive flank of the Democrat party for high-profile help.
On Friday, Levin held a joint rally with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I- VT) and antisemitic "Squad" member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who is facing a primary challenge in the nearby 12th District. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) held a get-out-the-vote rally for Levin on Sunday.
Last month, Levin, a longtime union organizer, was arrested twice. Once while protesting with Senate cafeteria workers outside the Capitol as part of their push for a union contract, according to his Twitter account.
Earlier in the week, he was also among a group of lawmakers arrested at an abortion rights rally outside the Supreme Court.
Stevens delivered a victory speech during an event with supporters at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. Stevens said to her supporters, "I listened, I heard your stories, and I learned who you are. I’m a Democrat and it’s really simple who we are. We are the party of the people. My friends, November 8 is approaching and the Democratic message is on the ballot. Democrats are going to hold the House. Democrats are delivering for this country. I’m proud of all your hard work. Join me in getting out the vote this November, especially for Democratic women."
Due to his alliances with far-left antisemitic radicals such as Tlaib, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) super PAC, United Democracy Project, has spent over $3 million to defeat Levin.
Stevens has said she is proud of her "unequivocal" support of Israel and noted that her AIPAC support is based on her belief in a strong US-Israel relationship.
