Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a post on X, "My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon."
Multiple people, including two police officers, were injured in a police-involved shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday. At least one person has died.
Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to an incident near 15 E. Grant St. when gunfire broke out. According to KSTP-TV, at least six people, including two officers, were shot. The outlet reported that one officer was struck in the stomach and another was shot in the leg. One of the officers underwent surgery, while the other suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
Footage from the area showed a heavy police presence, including SWAT-style officers and armored vehicles. Police were also seen aiming rifles upward toward an apartment tower. The University of St. Thomas' Minneapolis campus, which is located near the scene, issued a shelter-in-place order "out of an abundance of caution."
County spokesperson Joshua Yetman said that Hennepin County Medical Center received seven patients, with one of them being deceased. The deceased individual's identity was reported by CNN to be the shooter.
KARE 11 reported that the shooting began as a "domestic incident" between the shooter and one of the victims. Officers responded to the incident and were shot at by the gunman as he retreated into his apartment.
In response to the shooting, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a post on X, "My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement and we will share more information as it becomes available.”
In a separate post, the governor added, "Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. Minnesota is praying for our first responders."
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar confirmed that she had spoken with the Minneapolis Mayor about the shootings, saying, "My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. Thank you to our courageous law enforcement."
FBI Director Kash Patel said that the bureau is aware of the shooting and offered "any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities."
