Trump was previously considering a visit to Congress and was open to pitching himself as a candidate for speaker.
Fox News host Sean Hannity cited “direct sources” Thursday night that the former president would be endorsing Jordan “very soon.”
Politico reported earlier in the day that Trump, the current frontrunner for the GOP nomination for president in 2024 was considering a visit to Congress next week and was open to pitching himself as a candidate for speaker.
Rep Troy Nehls (R-TX) said on Thursday he had spoken to Trump, who told him that he would endorse Jordan and posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "Just had a great conversation with President Trump about the Speaker's race. He is endorsing Jim Jordan, and I believe Congress should listen to the leader of our party."
Nehls added, "I fully support Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House.
Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) has also thrown his hat in the ring for speaker.
Late Thursday night, Trump confirmed the reports in a post on Truth Social which praised Jordan's work in Congress and even his NCAA achievements. Trump wrote that Jordan "...will be a great Speak of the House and has my complete and total endorsement."
"Hearing the DJT news on Jordan is legit," Jack Posobiec said.
Jordan joined Hannity and reacted to the news by saying, “I do think we are gathering support though across the conference…from conservatives to more moderate members…and I feel that's important because this election for speakers about two issues; who can bring our team together? Who can unite our conference? And who can go tell the American people what we're doing and why it's important to them?”
Jordan told Hannity he believes he can do that. “That's why I'm running. I've been on the phone all day long with colleagues from around the country and I tell him the job I have, I like, I want to keep, I like that job, but someone's got to be able to come forward, unite the Republicans around our message, around what we're doing for the American people and go make that, take that message to the country and deliver it in a compelling, succinct way, which I think I can do.
Following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy as speaker earlier this week, Jordan sent a letter to House colleagues urging their support for his campaign for speaker. "The American people have entrusted us to lead in the House of Representatives. Our majority has had success in the first nine months of the 118th Congress. We should be proud of what we have achieved together in these divided times.”
He added, "But our work is not done,” noting that progressive policies are "destroying our communities, our security, and our future."
"The Republican majority must continue to address the issues that matter to the American people," he continued adding that "we agreed at the beginning of the Congress that there are three fundamental things the House must do: pass the bills that need to be passed, do the oversight, and rein in the spending."
Hannity added that both Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) who held up McCarthy’s election as speaker and Rep. Matt Gaetz who motioned to remove McCarthy support Jordan for the position.
Republicans are scheduled to hold a closed-door candidate forum for candidates on Tuesday and a vote is expected Wednesday.
