As the entire province of Ontario plunges into a grey-zone lockdown, protestors once again gathered to march through the streets of downtown Toronto demanding an end to the ongoing restrictions.
Unlike previous weeks, the protest was not granted a police escort and was warned that they must abide by the highway traffic act, including staying off the roads and stopping at crosswalks.
Organizer Kelly Ann Wolfe said “The Highway traffic Act does not take precedence over the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is a protest. Marching in that street, we are expressing our rights.”
Police then attempted to ticket Wolfe, who refused to accept the fine. Several anti-lockdown protestors and organizers have received fines in recent weeks.
“People need to understand their rights in this country,” she said to The Post Millennial, adding “and that need to understand that the police are obligated to uphold the constitution and the charter. As long as you refuse to contract and stand under their demands because they’re unlawful, and you let them know that they will be violating their oath to uphold the constitution, they have no choice.”
One protestor, Mike, said “I’m prepared to get arrested,” adding “This isn’t right. This is a democracy? Yeah right.”
