The United Nations General Assembly has banned Russia from the Human Rights Council on Thursday, due to "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" in war-torn Ukraine.
The US-led motion saw 93 nations vote in favor, with 24 voting against, and 58 abstaining. A two-thirds majority was required, not including abstentions.

The last country to be suspended from the council was Libya in 2011 following violent actions by Muammar Gaddafi.
A "yes" vote is considered by Russia to be an "unfriendly gesture," reports Reuters, and one that will be met with "consequences for bilateral ties, according to a note seen" by the outlet.
According to UN Watch's Hillel Neuer, the push was guaranteed to pass "because only a handful will vote No & abstentions won't count for required 2/3 majority."
