The highway in Atlanta was shut down on Thursday evening in Atlanta to make way for the presidential motorcade as it barreled to the Fulton County jail where President Donald Trump would be arrested, finger printed, and photographed, for the release of a mugshot. His bail has been set at $200,000.
That mugshot was not initially released, but was later posted. Trump was in the jail for only a short period of time, less than 20 minutes, was booked, fingerprinted, and then departed.
Trump spoke from the tarmac before boarding his plane and heading back to New Jersey.
"This should never happen," Trump said. "If you challenge an election you should be able to challenge an election. I thought the election was a rigged election, a stolen election. And I should have every right to do that.
"As you know you, have many people that you've been watching over the years do the same thing whether it's Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrams or many others. When you have that great freedom to challenge you have to be able to, otherwise you can have very dishonest elections.
"What has taken place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong. And everybody knows it. I've never had such support. And that goes for the other ones too. What they're doing is election interference or trying to interfere with an election. There's never been anything like in our country before.
"This is their way of campaigning. And this is one instance but you have three other instances it's election interference. So I want to thank you for being here. We did nothing wrong at all. And we have every right— every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest, and we think it's very dishonest. So thank you all very much and I'll see you very soon. Thank you." He finished, boarded his plane, and did not take questions.
Trump was booked and processed in Fulton County Jail with warrant number 23SC188947. The booking document shows him as a white male, 6'3", 215 pounds, with blond or strawberry hair and blue eyes. His arraignment will be at a separate date.
The Fulton County DA's office seems to believe that the most recognizable man in the world is a flight risk, needs to be convinced to return to face trial through bond, and needs a mugshot despite his face being known to nearly every human on earth. Trump was accompanied by the Secret Service at the Fulton County Jail.
The visual of Trump's motorcade arriving at the courthouse was nothing less than surreal. No president in American history has been criminally indicted, arrested, and prosecuted on criminal charges. Trump supporters stood outside the jail, waiting for him to arrive, and shouting their support for the 2024 frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination as he seeks a second term in office.
Many of those supporters believe fully that the indictment is a political prosecution, and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio has demanded details as to Willis' alleged relationship with the Department of Justice.
The DOJ has indicted Trump both in Florida and in DC on alleged conspiracy charges stemming from an FBI seizure of documents at his Mar-a-Lago home in August 2022, as well as charges of conspiracy to overthrow the government after the much contested 2020 general presidential election. Trump is also facing charges of "falsification of business documents" in New York over alleged payments made to his attorneys which were recorded as legal fees. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg alleges that the attorneys then used those funds to pay a porn star to keep quiet over an alleged dalliance.
Fulton County DA Fani Willis convened a grand jury which then indicted Trump, along with 18 co-defendants, consisting primarily of his attorneys and associates. The criminal indictment names Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Mark Meadows, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeff Clark, Jenna Ellis, Ray Smith III, Robert Sheeley, Michael Roman, David Shafer, Shawn Still, Stephen Lee, Harrison Floyd, Trevian Kutti, Sidney Powell, Cathleen Latham, Scott Hall, and Misty Hampton. Some of these have already been arrested, their mugshots released.
The lengthy charges include violation of the Georgia RICO Act, solicitation of violation of oath by public officer, false statements and writings, impersonating a public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, forgery in the first degree, conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree, conspiracy to commit false statements and writings, criminal attempt to commit filing false documents, conspiracy to commit filing false documents, criminal attempt to commit influencing witnesses, influencing witnesses, conspiracy to commit election fraud, conspiracy to commit computer theft, conspiracy to commit computer trespass, conspiracy to commit computer invasion of privacy, conspiracy to defraud the state, and perjury.
