Also being released is Andrey Kuznechyk, a European journalist.
Adam Boehler, the US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, announced on Wednesday that President Trump successfully negotiated the release of an unidentified American citizen from a Belarusian prison, along with two others, including a European journalist from Radio Liberty.
Radio Free Europe reports that the journalist is Andrey Kuznechyk: "Andrey Kuznechyk, a journalist with RFE/RL’s Belarus Service, has been released from a Belarusian prison after being held for more than three years on charges he, his employer, US officials and human rights organizations called politically motivated."
The announcement comes just one day after news that Marc Fogel, an American school teacher who was imprisoned in Russia, would be released. He had been in a Russian jail since 2021.
“We can confirm the release of one American and two individuals from Belarus, one of whom worked for Radio Liberty. Out of respect for the privacy of these individuals, at their request, we have no further details to announce on their identity, but we can confirm that one American was released today and it’s a remarkable victory on the heels of Marc Fogel returning to America last night,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, adding that she had no further information on who, if anyone, would be released in exchange.
“This is a joyous day for Andrey, his wife, Alesya, and their two young children. After more than three years apart, this family is together again thanks to President [Donald] Trump,” Radio Free Europe President & CEO Stephen Capus said in a statement,, noting the efforts of Secretary of State Marco Rubio "and his team," as well as the Lithuanian government.
