The Islamic Republic of Iran was expelled from the UN Women's Rights Commission on Wednesday, by a vote of 29 to 8, with 16 abstentions. It is the first time in the UN's history that any member state has been removed from the Women's Rights Commission.

Iran was ousted from the body for policies that are contrary to the rights of women and girls. It comes after a US-led effort, following Tehran's crackdown on protests, reports Reuters.

Pressure has been mounting for Iran to be removed from the UN Women’s Rights Commission as women-led protests in that country have mounted for the securing of equal rights. These protests have been met with force from the regime, as well as mass arrests.

The 54-member body adopted the US-drafted resolution to "remove with immediate effect the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term."

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said before the vote that ousting Iran was the right thing to do, as Tehran's presense was an "ugly stain on the commission’s credibility."

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
