This comes after Israel launched a strike against Iran.
As Iran has launched a retaliatory attack on Israel in the wake of Israeli forces launching a strike on Iran, the US is reportedly assisting Israel in intercepting incoming ballistic missiles, Axios reported, citing an Israeli official and a senior US official.
Speaking with Fox News’ Brett Baier on Thursday night, President Donald Trump said that the US would assist Israel in defending its nation "if needed," Baier said.
The US official who spoke to Axios said that the US was working to protect US civilians and assets in Israel.
At least 15 people have been wounded in Israel in the attack. In a speech on Iranian state television shortly before the attack, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said Iran's armed forced would leave Israel "helpless." He said, per Axios, "The Iranian nation won't permit the blood of its valued martyrs to go unavenged, nor will it ignore the violation of its airspace."
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran had "crossed red lines when it dared to fire missiles at civilian population centers in Israel." He added, "We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel and ensure that the ayatollah regime pays a very heavy price for its criminal actions."
