A well-respected emergency room doctor and father of two was killed while out for a bike ride in southern California Wednesday afternoon in what authorities are investigating as a road rage incident.
While stopped at a red light on the Pacific Coast Highway, 58-year-old Dr. Michael Mammone was struck from behind by a vehicle, then savagely attacked by the knife-wielding driver.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the incident took place around 3 pm in the ritzy seaside community of Dana Point.
The driver of the vehicle, 39-year-old Long Beach accountant Vanroy Evan Smith, allegedly rammed Mammone to the ground before getting out and stabbing the doctor in the back. He was then disarmed by two bystanders, who detained him until law enforcement arrived. While a knife was discovered at the scene, no firearms were recovered, despite claims that he had been carrying one.
Mammone, who had been in the bike lane, was found laying in the intersection with "severe injuries" and rushed to hospital, but he passed away a short time later.
The Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, where Mammone worked in the Emergency Room, said in a statement that they were "stunned by this devastating tragedy."
"The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend. We will honor Dr. Mammone’s dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care."
Mammone also leaves behind his wife and two sons.
Smith was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, and is set to appear in court on Friday.
Authorities have found no connection between Mammone and Smith, nor has a motive been determined. Fellow cyclists noted an increase in "road rage" as of late, and suggested that could be the case.
According to ABC News, one resident said he heard Smith shout "white privilege" slurs at Mammone after he got out of the vehicle, however these claims were not verified by law enforcement.
In an interview with FOX 11 Los Angeles, one of Smith's clients said the incident was "beyond shocking," calling his actions "out of character."
"He never presented to me that he would have any dangerous propensities," the man said.
