“States should enact safeguards against noncitizens registering and voting."
A report from the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) reveals that election officials in Alameda County, CA have been systematically registering non-citizens to vote by not verifying or by simply ignoring the immigration status of the people they interview and assess.
According to a report released by the foundation, election officials in Alameda registered foreign nationals from China and around the world—even if those persons acknowledged during questioning that they were not US citizens. This phenomenon has been considered business as usual in the county for at least 20 years, as PILF discovered evidence of an illegal immigrant being registered to vote in 2004.
In the data obtained by PILF, there were 54 examples of non-citizens being allowed to vote. “States should enact safeguards against noncitizens registering and voting,” PILF President J. Christian Adams said in an emailed statement to Just the News.
According to the report, in February 2024, PILF sued Alameda County for not disclosing records of foreign nationals being approved to register to vote and then not being removed from the voting rolls if this was discovered. The foundation eventually received the documents, which read:
“The County supplied records relating to more than 60 voter registration files. This sampling from this county revealed two significant patterns: aliens admitted they were not U.S. citizens on the registration forms; and they often remain on the rolls for years until they try to naturalize and must ask election officials to remove them from the voter roll,” the report states.
PILF discovered that California counties “are not performing citizenship verification” and simply rely on the testimony of potential registrants and assume they are telling the truth. “Documents disclosed by Alameda County during the lawsuit typically show how foreign nationals are honest or silent about their ineligibility during registration. Had they simply said they were US citizens, no further verification would have occurred under California law.”
“These records show incompetence by election officials. When someone admits they are not a US citizen, they should never be registered to vote," Adams told Just the News. "California has the resources and data to better verify citizenship in voter registration if only Gov. [Gavin] Newsom (D-CA) had a willingness to act.”
