Trudeau's federal government is investing $132.9 million into a climate fund which purports to help out with women's rights and sustainable and clean growth on the African continent.
Ten million dollars of this $132.9 million is considered to be a grant, and the rest is a fully repayable contribution. The Trudeau government will send the money to the African Development Bank Group at the end of Mar. 2021.
According to the National Observer, the Minister of International Development, Karina Gould, said:
"Climate change is among the most important challenges of our time, and we know that some countries are especially at risk to its impacts."
"Climate change is having a growing impact on the African continent, hitting the most vulnerable hardest, and contributing to food insecurity, population displacement and stress on water resources," commented Petteri Taalas, the UN World Meteorological Organization's Secretary General.
"In recent months, we have seen devastating floods, an invasion of desert locusts and now face the looming spectre of drought because of a La Niña event. The human and economic toll has been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic."
The fund is designed to last for 30 years, and will support projects related to green and sustainable infrastructure and energy in various places throughout Africa.
