After 17 months of complete prohibition at the Canada/US land border to all non-essential travel, US citizens and permanent residents can now visit Canada again, provided that they are fully vaccinated.

These new measures have been planned since at least mid-Jul. 2021.

The new rule defines "fully vaccinated" as someone who has had all the doses of an approved vaccine at least 14 days prior to showing up at the border. As well, travellers must download and use the ArriveCan app or web interface to upload proof of vaccination. Also, they still must take a molecular COVID test and show proof of such at the border.

The vaccines approved by Health Canada at this time are those of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.

According to the Williams Lake Tribune, the US has not reciprocated the measure yet. They report that "The US, for its part, has been mum on when it might begin to ease its own restrictions on non-essential Canadian travellers at land crossings. Air and sea travellers are exempt, though passengers by rail, ferry and pleasure boat are not."

The Canadian government, on the other hand, has also announced plans to allow vaccinated visitors from outside the US to come to Canada under similar circumstances as of Sept. 2021.

It appears the Canadian government is willing to go ahead with its plans, despite concerns over the new Delta variant, which has been making its way across the world lately.
