The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) ruled Thursday that a CTV National News program violated the code of ethics for Canadian broadcasters, reported True North.

CTV reporter Joy Malbon said that former US president Donald Trump called the coronavirus a “hoax” during a Sept. 9, 2020 panel.

According to the report, a viewer of the program complained that CTV misrepresented Trump and said that the former President had said the Democrats politicization of the pandemic was a hoax not the virus itself.

Following a review of the footage and subsequent investigation, the CBSC found that the news outlet had violated the Codes of Ethics of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada.

The CBSC decision read, “A statement by Donald Trump was misrepresented in a report about his approach to the pandemic. The report breached the clauses relating to accuracy and correction of errors.”

According to True North, “CTV admitted the misrepresentation but disagreed with the complaint’s insinuation that CTV reporters had ‘complete disdain’ for the former president.”

CTV said in a response to the decision, “We regret and apologize for this inadvertent error and can assure you that there was no intent to ‘spin’ the news as you suggest. We also respectfully disagree with your suggestion that CTV News staff have disdain for the President,” despite having shown their disdain for Trump as recently as the broadcast of President Joe Biden’s inauguration, as reported by True North.
