A homeless woman with a criminal history has been charged with assault after allegedly shoving a 3-year-old child onto train tracks from a platform at the station in Portland.
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office, on Wednesday at the Gateway Transit Center MAX platform in Northeast Portland, "a mother and child were waiting for a MAX train when Brianna Lace Workman, 32, allegedly shoved the child, aged three, off of the platform and onto the MAX train tracks without provocation."
The child landed face-first onto the metal rail and rocks before being quickly rescued from the train tracks. The incident was captured on the station's video surveillance.
A private security officer told police that he saw Workman shove the three-year-old onto the train tracks for no reason and a bystander added that she saw a "little girl flying into the tracks" face first and saw the girl's head bounce off the track metal.
According to court documents, the girl's mother told investigators that she and her daughter had no interaction with Workman before the attack.
Thursday, the DA announced that Workman was arraigned on Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Interfering with Public Transportation, Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office has filed charges, including an offense for which Oregon law permits pretrial detention, and is requesting that Workman remain in custody and be held without bail.
According to KGW, Workman appears to be homeless and has several felony convictions. The last one was in 2013 for heroin possession and the more recent convictions were on misdemeanor charges.
The outlet noted that in June 2021, Workman was arrested by Portland police "after a man living downtown said he'd invited her into his room to have breakfast and she slashed him with a knife."
According to the probable cause affidavit, Workman claimed she had "had a mental breakdown" and "blacked out."
Workman told police, "I don't know why I hit him. I was trying to kill myself by stabbing him."
A deputy district attorney applied to have the charges in the case dismissed, and the presiding judge did so.
